Squaring the Culture

"...and I will make justice the plumb line, and righteousness the level;
then hail will sweep away the refuge of lies,
and the waters will overflow the secret place."

Stop Talking About It

I’m not the greatest fan of Morgan Freeman, nor do I think that skill and success at representing people other than yourself in front of a camera should automatically confer on somebody the right to be taken seriously, but in this instance the man has something useful to say.

This is actually old; the earliest date I saw on this clip, at the CBS News web site, was June 14, 2006. This is Freeman’s take on Black History Month from an interview with Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes. It’s just under 1 minute long.

Listen:

Mike Wallace made an ass of himself with “I’m Jewish,” as though that let him off the hook for “White History Month.” Freeman’s impatience with the irrelevancy was obvious, but he recovered nicely: “Ok, then, do you want Jewish history month?”

The most telling exchange was after Wallace exposed his leftist cluelessness: “How are we going to get rid of racism…” Notice that Wallace is asserting that racism occurs outside of himself. Freeman’s answer, “Stop talking about it,” posits racism in Wallace’s own house. “You are the source of racism, Mike Wallace,” is what he’s saying.

I do see racism in practice from time to time, but not often. Mostly I see it in the following places: (1) I hear it from blacks, directed at white people; (2) I hear it from progressives, directed at black conservatives; and (3) occasionally, I hear subtle racism in Democratic party campaign ads directed at their own voters. Take note of #3, because what it says is that not only is most of the racism in America to be found in the Democratic party, but it says that the Democrats know it’s there.

Virtually all talk about racism comes from progressives, thinking they’re describing conservatives. This is a race problem that exists only in progressives’ heads. They have no facts supporting their claim, so facts cannot stop them from making it. The correct solution is Andrew Breitbart’s: draw attention to the tactic itself, and call it “despicable character assassination,” which it is. If they’re embarrassed badly enough, perhaps they’ll stop doing what they’re doing.

“If they’re embarrassed badly enough, perhaps they’ll stop doing what they’re doing.”

Unlikely. You can’t divide and conquer if you don’t have a means of division. The Left identifies characteristics as a means of splitting off groups from the “main herd”, in order to weaken the herd.

To look at it another way…racism is actually the great “so what”. It is not illegal to be racist. It _is_ illegal to commit racist acts of various sorts, and the law requires that most things be done without regard to race, but we supposedly have freedom of association and freedom of thought, and if I want to think any particular group of people has certain characteristics – usually called stereotyping – that’s my business and my right. The Left has made it _their_ business to make stereotyping a “sin” by their moral code, and point it out as if people were committing adultery – which of course, they _don’t_ consider a sin!

“Stop talking about it” worked like a charm back when segregation was the norm, so I’m sure it’ll work again! Hey, maybe if everyone just stops talking about America’s bad economy & unemployment, they’ll just magically go away too!

I like Morgan Freeman, but he’s just plain wrong here. Real-life problems are not soluble with magic thinking. Slavery didn’t go away because nobody talked about it, nor did child labor, nor did women’s “natural” legal status as disenfranchised property.

The solution to racism is no mystery: make such behavior prohibitively costly to those who choose it, & educate people to understand each other better.

“I do see racism in practice from time to time, but not often. Mostly I see it in the following places: (1) I hear it from blacks, directed at white people; (2) I hear it from progressives, directed at black conservatives; and (3) occasionally, I hear subtle racism in Democratic party campaign ads directed at their own voters.”

This is a joke, right?

Either you’re being disingenuous or you don’t read the news much. protest signs depicting Obama as a witch-doctor with a bone through his nose? A GOP office sending out pictures of the White House with watermelons on the lawn? Paladino sending out pictures of the POTUS & First Lady photoshopped to look like a pimp & a whore? Scores of Republican campaign ads that all depict Mexicans as terrifying gang-bangers?

PS: Mike Wallace is a “leftist” in the same way that a trout is a mammal.

Corporate media only puts on the odd token leftist for occasional use as a rhetorical punching-bag. The rest of the time it avoids them like the plague, both because what they have to say seldom fits neatly into 12-minute segments between ads & because their ideas are too sponsor-unfriendly for exposure. The media is so “liberal” that it happily gives people like Hannity, Beck & Palin their own prime-time television shows. Note that Beck didn’t get his TV debut on FOX, but on CNN. When’s the last time you saw Noam Chomsky or Michael Parenti appearing on any major network?

But maybe the constant MSM bias toward the right will magically evaporate – if everyone agrees to stop talking about it …

Wow, this is odd. I thought everybody had stopped reading my blog.

This sentence tells me everything I need to know about you:

PS: Mike Wallace is a “leftist” in the same way that a trout is a mammal.

Ah, yes. And I’m guessing you think the New York Times is middle-of-the-road, too.

Please understand that I use “leftist” in the manner that most conservatives use “liberal.” I do it because the term “liberal” was applied to the left in American when the term had meaning, but the people who now sit under that name are anything but liberal. If you have a term you’d prefer for me to use to discuss the mainstream American left, feel free to offer it. If it makes sense (I’m not holding my breath) I’ll use it for you.

Leftists in America, as a group, seem incapable of accurate self-reflection. As a consequence, when they hear somebody who agrees with them interpreting the news (which is what “reporters” are all doing these days) they don’t think “Ok, this is a person who thinks like me, and I’m a leftist, so the news has a leftward bias.” That would be the sound inference drawn by a person who is capable of accurate self-reflection. Since they’re not capable of that, they think “Ok, this person thinks like me, and I’m NORMAL and UNBIASED, so they must be unbiased.” You see, whatever a leftist thinks, that’s the “unbiased” position. It’s also the “open-minded” position, the “scientific” position, the “logical” position, the “moral” position, and so forth. Leftists have no definition for any of those terms other than “What I think.” That’s the only way a person can watch news in America and not see the gob-smacking obvious leftward tilt of every news program except for most of those on Fox (and by the way, if you need peer-reviewed research documenting the leftward tilt of the major news media, I’ll be glad to supply it. UCLA did a pretty impressive study of that about 9 years ago.)

My thesis explains such breathtaking stupidity as the fellow — who had a pretty high IQ and considered himself a free-thinker — who said to me once, “You’re not open-minded. If you were open-minded, you would agree with me.” I’m afraid that left me speechless. But I’m betting that you don’t perceive the irony of that sentence, do you?

By the way, Noam Chomsky is not an American leftist, he’s a neo-Marxist. The primary difference is deceit, usually self-deceit; American leftists do not acknowledge the influence of Marxian thinking on their own position, although that influence is unmistakable to those who are not in their circle. Apart from that, the different between “mainstream American leftist” and “hard-core neo-Marxist” is mostly a matter of degree rather than type.

Slavery didn’t go away because nobody talked about it, nor did child labor, nor did women’s “natural” legal status as disenfranchised property.

American leftists are also incapable of assessing analogies correctly. I don’t get why this is; it does not seem to show up on intelligence tests, but dammit, every time a leftist argues using analogies in my hearing, they’re using them incorrectly.

Here’s the key, sonny-boy: people talking about racism pretty much IS the majority of racism in America these days. That’s because guys like you, and LEFISTS like Mike Wallace, see racism everywhere it isn’t. So if you folks stop talking about it, that will solve the problem. That’s the clear message of the piece. Get it now?

Either you’re being disingenuous or you don’t read the news much. protest signs depicting Obama as a witch-doctor with a bone through his nose? A GOP office sending out pictures of the White House with watermelons on the lawn? Paladino sending out pictures of the POTUS & First Lady photoshopped to look like a pimp & a whore? Scores of Republican campaign ads that all depict Mexicans as terrifying gang-bangers?

This is actually pretty funny. I think you must have scoured for hours to find every plausible instance of a “racist” political ad in the last 5 years. And please trust me when I tell you that the photographers who produced those instances you’ve mentioned scoured gatherings for days and weeks and months hoping to find something like that. In fact, there have been far more racist memes produced by what turned out to be leftist plants than were produced by actual conservatives. I’ve attended several tea party rallies, and seen hundreds of signs from those — how many images of Obama with a bone through his nose do you suppose I saw? I’ve attended thousands of church meetings — how many racist comments do you suppose I’ve heard?

Freeman’s point is that if we count up all the genuine expressions of racism that occur in America, for each one of those there are 50,000 that occur no place but in the average leftist’s head. It’s you guys who are keeping racism alive. That’s why when a conservative says “People who are here illegally should be prosecuted for their violation of the law” — as clear a statement of a simple moral axiom as a sane person could possibly imagine — leftists hear “I really really really hate brown people.” There’s nothing about brown people from the conservatives; they’re talking strictly about the rule of law. All the talk of racism comes from you guys. Whenever a leftist politician mentions how conservatives “talk in code,” what they’re admitting is that there is no racist talk whatsoever to which they can point.

And your reasons for doing it are truly appalling. At the core, the average leftist is morally ignorant; y’all don’t even have a tiny notion of where morals come from, and nothing you produce in the name of morality has a lick of sense to it. Since you’re all so morally inept, and mostly captive to ordinary sorts of personal evil because you have no idea what it is, you need some outside target to point to and say “We’re not like THAT” in order to think of yourselves as good people.

Racism serves that purpose; leftists, plying their ideas through the culture, have virtually unmade Western Civilization in the last 60 years, and turned a civil, well-educated, hard-working, prosperous and friendly nation into an angry, economically-depressed cesspool. Every step of the way, through every destructive change, your excuse as been “But we’re not RACISTS like those people were back then,” as though vanquishing racism — which would have occurred much more effectively without you, by the way — was a valid excuse for undermining civility, turning young people into sex addicts, destroying families and ensuring virtually nobody gets raised by two parents in a normal household, enslaving poor people to the dole, murdering babies by the millions in the name of “choice,” excusing criminals, tyrants, and psychopaths while you vilify honorable people, and so forth. But that’s what the leftist obsession with racism is — it’s the excuse generated in the late 20th century by the morally inverted to cover their inversion. That’s why you have to keep it alive 3 decades past the point where it’s become nothing more than the occasional unpleasant reminder.

You must have caught me on a bad night. I’m usually a lot more friendly the first time somebody calls me disingenuous, and sneers “you must be joking” at something I’ve said seriously. Perhaps you should tone down your approach if you want friendlier replies. Just a thought.
