Yesterday’s blog noise included discussion of the following McCain ad that compares Obama’s celebrity to that of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, and asks “But is he ready to lead?” The discussion included a comment by The New Republic’s Eve Fairbanks, followed by a brief photo analysis by one Rick Perlstein, that just has to be seen to be believed.
Perlstein and Fairbanks noted some similarity between the brief crowd scenes in the McCain ad and the crowd scene in Leni Riefenstahl’s 1934 Nazi documentary Triumph of the Will, featuring a 9-minute speech by Adolph Hitler.
Yes, they’re serious. And Perlstein adds that McCain’s ad invokes the image of Black Obama Gonna Rape Yo’ Daughters. He’ serious about that, too.
I’m confused. I thought the Republican base consisted of gun-totin’, NASCAR-watchin’, niece-rapin’, religious nuts with no education, except for the ones who are Rich, Evil, Greedy Captains of Industry who are, likewise, without education and incapable of clear thought. So, which part of the Republican base is going to recognize a brief clip from a 1934 Nazi documentary?
Oh, wait, wait, I get it! It’s for the stupid, uneducated, NASCAR-watchers and Greedy Captains of Industry who secretly watch Nazi documentaries in their basements while pining for the good, old days. Of course. Why didn’t I think of that? Silly me.
Seriously, folks, I’m religiously Christian but ethnically Jewish, and I find Perlstein an embarrassment to my race. I’m sure his IQ tests high, but he’s absolutely firing on fewer than 3 cylinders (out of 8 ) with this one. Gotta ask the idiotic putz and his friend at TNR, “You’ve got a long, narrow mall filled with people and blocked by trees on either side — just how many possible angles are there to film it?” Good grief.
As to “yo’ daughters,” believe me, when I see Britney and Paris, I don’t think of my daughters, I think of what my daughters would have been like if I’d had too much money and hadn’t raised them properly. My daughters don’t behave like those two, thank God. And I’m not worried about Obama “raping” them. I’m worried about an empty-headed freaking ZERO running the greatest nation on earth, because mindless putzes like Perlstein don’t have the sense God gave a bovine, and think the ability to deliver a speech constitutes qualification to hold high office.
And while we’re at it, while I’m 100% sure the connection between Riefenstahl and the McCain campaign is nothing but Perlstein’s tacky fantasy, I also think that recalling how mindless herds have followed charismatic but untrustworthy leaders over cliffs in the past is completely and entirely appropriate when considering Obama. I think it’s entirely possible that the McCain campaign had that general theme in mind when they filmed the ad — and I applaud them for it. I can’t think of anything that’s more relevant, or more correct, except to note Obama’s Marxist roots.
