What? Is She Still Alive?
My irony meter pegged.
There’s been a flap about Geraldine Ferraro’s (who?) comment that Barack Obama would not be where he is if he were white. The comment itself has limited merit. Obama has rhetorical and political skills that are out of the ordinary, so even if he were white, he’d be getting attention; it’s arguable that he might not be doing nearly so well, and especially among black voters, if he weren’t black himself, so perhaps she has half a point.
The most relevant fact, though, is that if Geraldine Ferraro were not a woman, we would not even know her name. She was not even qualified to be Vice President when selected to run alongside Walter Mondale in 1984. Today, she’s just a footnote.
Look up “irony” in the dictionary, and … well, you won’t see her picture, ’cause she’s still nobody, but you could put her picture there if you thought enough people would recognize her.
B’bye, Geraldine.

She was honest about her spot as veep. She said that she wouldn’t have been there if she weren’t a woman. She has the cred. to speak on the subject.
