Fred Bows Out
I was supporting Fred Thompson, and now I’m not, ’cause he dropped out of the race.
Thompson ran a thoughtful campaign that was long on content and short on sound bites. He attacked opponents only on matters of substance, and he never whined about attacks against him. He wasn’t driven to grab power by need or a sense of entitlement. These are all things we say we want in candidates; Thompson gave them, and the nation ignored. Perhaps we don’t really want that. Perhaps we have the leaders we deserve.
There’s lots of commentary on the web. Michelle Malkin comments with relevant quotes, and a fine blog site called, entertainingly, “This ain’t Hell, but I can see it from here” has a pretty good collection of links.
Regarding the remaining candidates, I’ve already made my feelings known about the quality of candidate offered Republicans in this race. We have nothing to complain about. The lesson is driven home soundly by The Anchoress, who is sick and tired of Boomer Self-Absorbed Whiner Republicans threatening to sit this one out ’cause they don’t want to vote for another “RINO.”
Pay attention, Republican:
The truth is the GOP had produced several reasonable candidates for the presidential nomination. None are “perfect,” but neither are you.
Get the message?
Ruth Ginzburg and John Paul Stephens are hanging onto their seats on the Supreme Court for no reason other than the hope that a Democrat will be elected in 2008 to replace them with another liberal. And if that’s not enough of a reason to vote Republican this year (it should be), consider that the next US President will have the opportunity to turn US sovereignty over to the UN in at least four different areas: laws of the sea, carbon production, world court, and election oversight. “RINO” Bush didn’t hand those away. Clinton, Obama, or Edwards would, in a heartbeat. Think about it. From where I sit, there is no long-term strategy possible here; we lose our sovereignty if we lose this election.
