Paul Disintegrating
Ron Paul says things that most people agree with. He’s wholeheartedly devoted to defending the US Constitution; he can say this and many people will applaud who feel the same way. His candidacy so far has succeeded as well as it has because some of the things he says strikes this chord with a lot of us.
The problem is, we’re starting to hear some of the other things he says. Truth is, Ron Paul is off the rails; he’s got general positions we like, but when we get to the specifics, we find out that he’s gone mad.
A few days ago, Jim Kirchick published in the New Republic an expose’ of 25-odd years of Paul’s past newsletters. Kirchick focuses on what he calls “bigotry,” but mostly the newsletters are remarkable for their intemperance. Short version: he’s a wild man.
And then, there’s this smackdown from last night’s debate. Brit Hume asks an appropriate, candid question that highlights the insanity of Paul’s comments, and Romney delivers the coup de grace, but the best part for me was the split screen showing John McCain’s unbelieving face as Paul demonstrated his sheer ignorance of military situations. The crowd noticed, too; you can hear them tittering. Courtesy of Hot Air.
Paul is a Libertarian. There’s a reason Libertarians don’t usually do well in the national election. The Libertarians think it’s because of the unjust power of the two-party system, which is why Paul is now running as a Republican. But they’re wrong; that’s not the reason. The reason is, we think they’re unstable.
