New Definition of “Bad Day”
I thought Mike Huckabee was too smooth to deconstruct himself, but that may not have been enough. An anonymous DC-based minion may have launched his “Dean Scream” for him.
Earlier today, a blogger from The Atlantic named Marc Ambinder quoted a “prominent DC-based Huckabee ally” claiming that Rush Limbaugh wouldn’t support Huckabee because he (Rush) is a tool of the DC-Manhattan chattering class and doesn’t think for himself (see it for yourself here). Rush teed off over that, predictably, and it’s been all downhill ever since. Major discussions on Gateway Pundit and Michelle Malkin, who revived the NY Post cover line, “I Hucked Up.”
Before the day was over, Condi Rice piled on with a rebuttal to Huckabee’s “bunker mentality” comment, Ann Coulter published a scathing anti-Huckabee column, and you should hear how she talked about him on Fox (I’m not agreeing, but it’s so blistering that I can’t fail to mention it).
Of course, it wasn’t Huckabee who launched the anti-Rush nastygram; it was anonymously quoted by a columnist from a magazine I don’t trust very much. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it turns out to have been planted by an anti-Huckabee Republican; it’s becoming pretty clear that there are a lot of Republicans, including the old-line establishment, that emphatically do not want him to win.
But whether that’s so or not, it’s been a hard, hard day for the Arkansas populist, and we’ll see soon whether he can recover. His campaign is already backpedaling on the Rush Bash.
12/22 Update: As predicted, Marc Ambinder admits that his source was not a member of the Huckabee campaign. He maintains, however, that the source is familiar with several of Huckabee’s campaign advisors, that it’s clear that Rush doesn’t want Huckabee to win the nomination, and that there are lots of opinions regarding why. As I said before, it’s not to be trusted; it’s badly-reported gossip, and Rush swallowed the hook, line, sinker, rod & reel, and just about ate the fisherman.
