The Loft features a shot at Barack Obama’s campaign stance championing a Senate bill to make it easier to sue an employer for pay discrimination. According to CNS News, says blogger Bobby Eberle, Obama’s own Senate payroll shows the sorts of pay disparities that would allow him to be sued.
It starts with equal pay? Did he seriously say that with a straight face? As CNSNews.com notes in their analysis, “On average, women working in Obama’s Senate office were paid at least $6,000 below the average man working for the Illinois senator.” CNSNews.com also points out that “of the five people in Obama’s Senate office who were paid $100,000 or more on an annual basis, only one — Obama’s administrative manager — was a woman.”
Of course, disparities between male and female pay grades in a relative small office mean nothing at all. Obama’s Senate staff was probably chosen for competence out of candidates selected from networking and by soliciting volunteers. It’s a self-selecting group. However, that’s the point: employers all over the country would be subject to specious lawsuits about meaningless disparities, and could be accused of sexism in the same way CNS accuses Obama. The incident illustrates just how destructive Obama’s proposed policy might be.
John McCain’s Senate office also has a pay disparity — in favor of women. Women outnumbered men on McCain’s Senate payroll by 30 to 16. The women were paid an average of $3,000 more than the men.
